This week, game developer Alkimia Entertainment has shared a new trailer detailing their work on the remake of the classic RPG, Gothic. The third episode in their Making Of series, as hinted by the teaser last week, delves into the artistic vision and design process behind the game’s creation.
According to Daniel Candil, the studio art director, the Gothic Remake was a delicate balance between making it appear both realistically believable and having a dark fantasy theme inside. He also discussed the importance of ensuring that the game felt authentic in terms of its color palette and texture appearance.
Candil remarked, “There are two contrasting elements at play here. One is focused on creating a world that feels authentic, believable, and grounded in reality. The other leans towards a more fantastical, ominous, and grim realm, filled with strange and eerie occurrences, hinting at dark magic.
Reinhard Pollice, who is both head of the studio and game director, explained that Alkimia drew inspiration from the original Gothic game series by examining all the Piranha Bytes-developed titles in the franchise. As these games are considered the definitive versions of Gothic, they were the ones the team focused on when planning the remake.
“And I also feel like these are the ones that the fanbase like the most.”
The trailer additionally showcases other contributors from the development squad, such as junior 3D artist Ana Gonzalez, who discuss their challenges in reimagining the initial RPGs for the forthcoming remake using contemporary tools that offer a greater degree of accuracy and realism. Consistently running through the Behind-the-Scenes video is the idea that not only should the game appear realistic while preserving its underlying dark, mystical aspects, but it must also be convincing.
In the discussion about reimagining the classic titles, you’ll notice they strive to find the perfect balance between old inspirations while catering to a contemporary audience. The video also offers glimpses of the game itself, showcasing diverse landscapes expected in the new Gothic remake – from swamps and castles to dungeons for added depth.
In our discussion today, we’re diving into the third installment of Alkimia’s “Making Of” series, which is centered around their reimagining of the game “Gothic”. The second segment aired in April, highlighting the contrasts between the original version and its upcoming remake. The inaugural Making Of video, launched as far back as February, delved into the core or essence of “Gothic”.
This upcoming reinterpretation of the classic game, titled “Gothic”, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S towards the end of the current year. At present, there’s no specified launch date, but you can enjoy some gameplay footage in the meantime.
