James Gunn Compares David Corenswet’s Superman to Chris Pratt

As a die-hard fan, I’d express it like this: In an exciting interview, the director of Superman, James Gunn, shared his quest for an actor on par with Chris Pratt to don the iconic cape. After careful consideration, he selected David Corenswet, known for roles in Affairs of State (2018) and Pearl (2022), for the part. It’s interesting to note that Gunn and Pratt have a history working together in the Guardians of the Galaxy film series.

James Gunn says he wouldn’t have done Superman without the right actor

In a recent interview with GQ, James Gunn discussed his approach to casting Superman for an upcoming film and emphasized the movie’s multi-layered tone as a blend of drama, humor, and action. He stated that if he couldn’t find the right Superman, he wouldn’t make the movie because he understood the crucial role the actor playing Superman would have in the film’s success.

The filmmaker mentioned that he was looking for actors who could both fit the required appearance (the “look”) and possess the necessary acting skills (the “chops”), rather than someone who had either just one aspect or struggled with the comedic or vulnerable elements of the role.

As stated by Gunn, his chosen actor, Corenswet, not only bore a striking resemblance to Superman but was also an unusual combination of a theater enthusiast and an incredibly athletic individual. Gunn went on to say that among the actors he has worked with in the past, only Chris Pratt could have pulled off what Corenswet achieved for the role of Superman.

While it’s unlikely that Gunn specifically had Pratt in mind for the iconic DC superhero role, it does show the high regard he holds for Pratt’s talent and versatility as an actor. It also hints at a potential collaboration between them within the DC Universe in the future. In a recent conversation with ComicBook, Gunn referred to Pratt as one of his “dearest friends globally” and mentioned that he is constantly on the lookout for suitable roles for him.

Superman debuts in US theaters on July 11, 2025.
