In a nutshell, when deciding between wireless and wired headphones, you’re often faced with a trade-off between sound quality and convenience. However, with the Audeze Maxwell wireless headset, I experienced exceptional audio quality while still enjoying the perks of mobility, although there were some minor compromises involved.
A sleek build
The Audeze Maxwell headset boasts a straightforward and stylish construction, being both lightweight yet robust due to its steel headband. However, I encountered some trouble with the adjustment strap; it seemed excessively challenging to manipulate. It was as if I had to risk bruising my fingertips or damaging the headset itself just to find a comfortable fit on my head.
After putting on the headset, I found it to be quite comfortable and well-fitting. It stayed securely in place as I moved around my apartment, without slipping or shifting. The earcups are soft and spacious, avoiding any pressure on my ears, which is ideal for extended gaming sessions. However, due to their snug fit against my head, they provide a subtle noise-cancelling effect. Keep in mind that this may muffle some of the ambient sounds around you if you prefer to hear your surroundings while using the headset.
The headset is equipped with control wheels for adjusting volume and balancing game and chat audio. It also features a detachable microphone that I utilized while playing on my Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2. Switching to my PC was straightforward, as all I had to do was remove the microphone and set it aside. The microphone’s quality is satisfactory for console gaming with friends, although it may not compare to professional-grade desk mics.
The package includes a USB-C to USB-C cable for connecting your headset directly to a device while charging it simultaneously. Regarding charging, I often get 2-3 days of use from my Audeze Maxwell before a robotic voice alerts me that the battery is running low. It’s worth noting that I utilize my headset throughout my entire workday and during my evening gaming sessions as well.
As a delighted user, I’ll gladly share that this headset will let you know when it’s powered on, and provide updates on its connection status with the device it’s linked to. For a seamless wireless experience, there’s a handy USB-C dongle you can connect to your device. Interestingly, the box comes equipped with a USB-C to USB-A adapter, perfect for devices lacking USB-C ports.
Listen closely
The sound quality of the Audeze Maxwell gaming headset is remarkably excellent. Immersive 3D audio in games and enhanced music listening experiences are just some perks of using this headset. Every word, note, and step sounds clear and defined, creating a crisp sensation.
With wireless headphones, I was amazed at the distance I could move without encountering any interruptions in my audio. On one particular day, I strolled from my third-story apartment to the lobby to fetch my mail, all while enjoying uninterrupted podcast listening.
One distinctive characteristic of the Audeze Maxwell headset is its ability to automatically mute audio when there’s no signal. This function is similar to how cars shut off their engines at red lights to save fuel. While this feature undoubtedly extends battery life, it sometimes creates a problem. When audio resumes, there’s a delay of about one second before the headset activates again. Consequently, you might miss the initial words or sounds of a YouTube video, Twitch stream, song intro, or even Discord notifications because they don’t immediately reach your ears. It seems like an instance where technology is overly intelligent to its detriment.
Still top-of-the-line
Audeze stands as a prominent figure in the realm of audio technology, and rightfully so. The Audeze Maxwell headset offers premium quality, comfort, and resilience, making it an ideal choice for me. Despite minor issues that occasionally arise, it delivers everything I seek in a headset. I wouldn’t be taken aback if it remained my preferred audio device for several years to come.
The following assessment pertains to a product we received from the manufacturer. As of now, you can purchase the Audeze Maxwell Gaming Headset for $299.99.
