Why Jurassic World Rebirth Doesn’t Retcon Any Previous Movies

The upcoming movie titled “Jurassic World Rebirth” functions independently from “Jurassic World Dominion,” which is set for release in 2022. Notably, it does not contradict any of the previous films in the series, a detail that screenwriter David Koepp has discussed recently.

Why doesn’t Jurassic World Rebirth retcon any past Jurassic Park movies?

To The Hollywood Reporter, Koepp (the writer of the original Jurassic Park films’ scripts) expressed his intention to acknowledge and honor the initial six movies in the series without misleading viewers into believing those films were never made – essentially avoiding any attempt at deception or manipulation.

In the last movie, they fully explored the concept that I found quite extraordinary – dinosaurs inhabiting buildings like the Chrysler Building and residing in downtown apartments. Frankly, I was at a loss for how to proceed with that premise when discussing ways to move beyond the storyline of dinosaurs coexisting with us in everyday life, as Koepp explained.

As a dedicated fan, I felt it was crucial to honor the events portrayed in the initial six films. It’s frustrating when a franchise movie undermines your understanding of the story by claiming, “No, that never happened” or “That was just another timeline.” I can’t stand such tricks! So I posed the question, “How do we preserve what has transpired while making it fresh and exciting once more?” My vision was to immerse ourselves back in their world instead of forcing them into ours.

While Jurassic World: Rebirth does include some nods and echoes from the earlier Jurassic World movie series, it primarily tells its own story independently. With a stellar cast including Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and others, Jurassic World: Rebirth is now playing in cinemas.
