Superman: James Gunn Defends DCU Movie’s Box Office Projections

According to James Gunn, it’s not necessary for Superman to earn as much at the box office as some people are suggesting for it to be considered successful.

This upcoming weekend, “Superman” will make its debut in U.S. cinemas, brought to you by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. Penned and helmed by Gunn, the film features David Corenswet as our superhero protagonist, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the shoes of Lex Luthor.

Based on an article from The Hollywood Reporter published recently, it’s projected that Superman will earn approximately $135 million during its U.S. opening weekend. However, some analysts predict the figure could be lower, ranging between $90 million and $125 million, while others are more optimistic, suggesting a potential earnings of up to $175 million.

What did James Gunn say about Superman’s box office projections?

Regardless of how Superman’s box office performance unfolds, Gunn appears quite unconcerned about it.

He shared with GQ Magazine, “This isn’t the most daring venture one could embark on. There is certainly something at stake, but it’s not as significant as some might suggest. The figures that the film needs to earn 700 million or more to be successful are simply exaggerated beyond reason. It doesn’t require such a grand scale of success as people are implying.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited to share that I’ll be the first to witness Superman’s cinematic debut within Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, which ignited last December with the animated Creature Commandos series. Fast forward to August 2025, and we’ll have Peacemaker Season 2 gracing our screens. Then, in June 2026, I can’t wait to catch Supergirl on the big screen!

In addition to Tyler Hoechlin playing Superman, the series also stars Edi Gathegi portraying Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan in the role of Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and many more talented actors.

Superman will be released in theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025.
