As the release date of Superman draws near, actress Isabela Merced, who portrays Hawkgirl in the movie, has spoken up about a potential romantic aspect for her character. In a recent interview, Merced brought up the romantic relationship between Hawkgirl and John Stewart’s Green Lantern from the Justice League Unlimited animated series, expressing her hope that this narrative could be developed within the DC Universe.

During an interview with Nerdist, along with her Superman co-stars, Merced reminisced about the romantic relationship between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series. The actress who plays Madame Web shared that not only is she a devoted fan of this storyline in the cartoons, but she’d be thrilled to see such developments in the DC Universe as well.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my deep-seated affection for the concept – and it’s this very reason that makes me adore Lois and Clark’s tales, with their captivating alien-human romance narrative. There’s an undeniable charm about it that resonates with me deeply. It’s almost as if they are caught in a romantic dance, where they should be apart but yearn to be together, only to find themselves torn once more.

This tug-of-love was particularly captivating for me as a child, striking a chord of both delight and sorrow. I still remember the poignant moment when she left the team. The betrayal was intense, almost surreal. It’s one of those moments in the Justice League Unlimited that left an indelible mark on my heart.

In the animated Justice League shows, Merced admired Maria Canals-Barrera’s portrayal of Hawkgirl. He expressed his enthusiasm about the future development of her character within the DC Universe post-Superman. The 23-year-old actress shared, “The affection I have for the character Maria brought to life, it certainly carried over to this incarnation, who is not Shayera Thal, but Kendra Saunders. Yet, she still possesses all the recollections of her past existence.” She went on to say, “I’m a big fan of her narrative, and I can hardly wait to see how it unfolds or if there might be a romantic element that could possibly emerge… since I am quite the hopeless romantic, indeed.

Although it’s not clear how Hawkgirl’s romantic storyline will unfold in the new DC Universe, audiences can witness Isabela Merced’s first appearance as this cherished superhero in Superman, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
