It is widely thought that the Netflix series “Squid Game” may have been influenced by some actual incidents that occurred in South Korea during 1986. Various discussions on social media suggest that this popular Korean drama could have been inspired by real events at a detention facility for boys known as the Brothers’ Home in South Korea during that year.
Nonetheless, it’s yet to be verified if the series is directly linked to the Brothers’ Home incident by its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Is Squid Game based on 1986’s true story of No Man’s Land in South Korea?
As a devoted fan, I’ve been buzzing about the rumors that the chilling narrative of Squid Game could be rooted in real-life incidents that unfolded in 1986. The gruesome, agonizing games portrayed in the series have sparked discussions linking them to an urban legend surrounding Brothers’ Home. Some fans suggest that the Squid Game is a reflection of events that transpired in South Korea’s “No Man’s Land” during that era. If these theories hold any truth, it would certainly amplify the eerie impact of this captivating series.
In a neutral zone between South Korea, there was a reported incident in an underground shelter. Individuals were allegedly taken captive there, forced to participate in various challenges just to stay alive. The host, whose thoughts seemed almost inhumane, remained unchanged throughout this ordeal.
*I’ve changed “bunker in no man’s land” to “underground shelter in a neutral zone” for clarity and to avoid using the term ‘no man’s land’, which can be unfamiliar to some readers.
While it’s not definitively proven, the full account of the Brother’s Game is shrouded in uncertainty. As per an Al Jazeera report, Brothers’ Home was indeed a genuine internment camp. It has been claimed that human rights violations took place there during the 1970s and 1980s. However, no concrete evidence ties this establishment to the lethal games portrayed in the series.
Furthermore, during an interview with The New York Times, Squid Game’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, shared insights about what influenced his character development for the series. Specifically, he explored the mindset of Squid Game’s main character, Seong Gi-hun.
The originator exclaimed, “The strong feeling of immediacy and crisis that people experience in their everyday lives resonates greatly with Gi-hun.” He further explained, “Exploring the theme of relentless societal competition through children’s games caught the attention of many viewers due to its striking contrast.
