As a die-hard fan, I can attest that the Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne farewell concert was an unparalleled spectacle. It takes years of honing one’s craft and delivering top-notch, edge-of-your-seat music to even attempt such a performance, and not everyone has that ability.
Although the concert had some less than ideal moments, it’s worth noting that while numerous bands showcased Sabbath or Ozzy memorabilia during their performances, Slayer opted to wear their own merchandise. This seemingly self-centered display felt somewhat out of place at an event intended as a farewell to another band.
All things considered, I’d say that every single dollar or pound spent on attending this performance was money well-spent. If you watched it online instead, the quality was still impressive. There were many unmissable moments throughout.
Three of the best moments from the Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne farewell concert
Metallica – “Johnny Blade”
As a music enthusiast, it was a given that every band on the bill played at least one track by Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne – a requirement of participation. However, some groups took things a step further and performed more than just one cover. For instance, Guns N’ Roses didn’t shy away from the challenge; they delivered an impressive six songs, with four of them being tributes to Sabbath.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that Metallica’s rendition of a few Sabbath tunes was quite enjoyable. However, what truly distinguished “Johnny Blade” from “Hole in the Sky” was the undeniable joy the band exuded while playing the track. It’s not just that it’s one of Sabbath’s more lively songs, but with talents like James Hetfield and his crew, they managed to elevate its quality at their farewell gig to a whole new level.
Supergroup B – Steven Tyler singing “Whole Lotta Love”
For some time now, Tyler has been facing issues with his vocal cord wellbeing, yet he managed to perform a brief set with Aerosmith more recently. Given that embarking on another tour seems impossible for him at the moment, it might be that Tyler and his band consider organizing a farewell concert instead. Although they may not be as famous as Black Sabbath, they certainly aren’t far behind in terms of popularity.
It could be surprising to find out that not just Tyler, but his performance was exceptional during the Sabbath farewell show. His rendition of the Led Zeppelin song sounded strikingly similar to Robert Plant’s. The moment was truly impactful, a combination of its unexpected occurrence and its powerful execution.
Ozzy Osbourne – “Mama I’m Coming Home”
Without a doubt, the most touching moment during the show was when Ozzy performed this number, causing many in the audience to shed tears. The authenticity of the event was vividly portrayed on Ozzy’s face. This performance marked the end of a remarkable career spanning many years. Given that he is battling Parkinson’s and singing about mortality only added to the poignancy of the situation.
Simultaneously, it was incredibly beautiful. Few vocalists can match the bond the Prince of Darkness shares with his crowd, and this moment served as a testament to that special connection. When tears are allowed to flow among tens of thousands at a heavy metal concert, you know the experience has been truly exceptional.
