Director Celine Song from Materialists contends that romantic comedies no longer enjoy the same level of popularity as they once did, attributable to several factors such as increasing instances of misogyny.

In an interview with Southampton Playhouse, Song was queried about the decrease in the number of romantic comedies being produced recently. Song attributed misogyny, among other factors, as one reason for this trend, also mentioning that people might feel “ashamed” or uncomfortable with expressing romance.

Song explained, “There are several factors at play, one being misogyny, but there’s another aspect to consider. The topic of romance often makes us feel self-conscious. Yes, it might be a romantic comedy. Yet, this term is sometimes used casually, implying it’s not a substantial film. I find that unfortunate because it seems to suggest that women and their interests aren’t taken seriously.

“In addition, deep-thinking individuals often find love and dating to be beyond their immediate concerns. However, even the most serious individuals engage in such activities, albeit with great difficulty. If you ask any serious person about it, they will admit to being troubled by love and dating. This genre is frequently overlooked or met with apprehension.

In 2025, it’s expected that a major romantic comedy film by materialists will be the biggest theatrical release of the year. Later on, Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is set to hit theaters, featuring Margot Robbie and Collin Farrell.
