Instead, they are aggressively investigating the possibility of automating jobs with artificial intelligence agents, despite a dip in employee morale and questionable future prospects for some game projects.
In the past 18 months, the Xbox division at Microsoft has undergone four rounds of layoffs, impacting thousands worldwide and hundreds within their gaming units particularly. These recent cuts are significant. While Microsoft’s leadership portrays this as a move for “strategic expansion,” some experts and insiders argue that artificial intelligence is being leveraged to replace human roles, disregarding the emotional toll it takes on employees.
Layoffs Amid Record Profits
Microsoft is currently swimming in wealth, as evidenced by its recent announcement of over $245 billion in annual revenue and more than $109 billion in operating income, both being record-breaking figures. In the 2024 annual report, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the company’s financial wellbeing, expressing excitement about an “AI platform shift” that he believes will steer Microsoft towards a prosperous future.
It appears that the future Microsoft aims to create doesn’t involve a significant number of employees who contributed to building its foundation. The company has recently announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 3%, and it was later confirmed that an additional 9,000 jobs would be lost, primarily from its gaming sector. King, a Swedish division well-known for Candy Crush, is letting go of 200 employees, while many European studios are experiencing similar layoffs.
In an internal communication to the team, the head of Microsoft’s gaming division, Phil Spencer, aimed to convey empathy, penning: “Let me express my understanding and support for your concerns.
“We must make choices now for continued success in future years… and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities.”
As a gamer, I’ve picked up on a subtle yet persistent buzz around the gaming community – it seems like “best chances” for success these days often mean swapping out human efforts with advanced machine learning systems.
AI Over Artists
At Halo Studios, Microsoft’s renowned gaming label, there seems to be a somber atmosphere. As reported by Rebs Gaming and Engadget, at least five staff members have recently been let go without much notice. These affected individuals were summoned for a meeting with management, but instead of discussion, they spent nearly two hours in silence before receiving the unfortunate news during a sudden Teams call.
One programmer candidly expressed the view that Microsoft is making a strong effort to automate jobs using artificial intelligence agents wherever possible.
There seems to be a noticeable increase in tension among the remaining team members, with the ongoing work on one specific Halo project being a significant source of concern, as it’s rumored to be facing serious difficulties.
A developer expressed their concern, stating that “currently, people aren’t genuinely satisfied with the product’s quality.” They mentioned that there has been much stress and attempts to motivate team members to complete the project.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve observed an interesting change in Microsoft’s approach: They seem to be leaning more towards collaborating with contracted studios rather than individual contractors, not just in the U.S., but also in Europe. Microsoft isn’t the only gaming company adopting automation, but it has become one of the most prominent and proactive advocates for AI transformation. Notably, this move is happening at a time when the overall gaming industry is experiencing challenges, with predictions suggesting that about 11% of game developers could lose their jobs by 2024.
The conundrum central to Microsoft’s present approach is quite evident: on one side, leaders boast about unprecedented user interaction, a growing library of games, and promising hardware plans. Contrarily, they are shutting down studios, abandoning projects, and dismissing thousands of employees – all while advocating AI as the key to fostering innovation.

“We continue to implement organizational and workforce changes that are necessary to position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace.”

Is This the Future?
Microsoft is placing significant investments on a future that involves machines collaborating to create games, scripts, artwork, and code.
