Odyssey Teaser Trailer Accents Are a Weird Thing to Get Upset About, But Here We Go

A sneak peek for the movie titled The Odyssey has been released both in cinemas and illegally online, sparking frustration among fans who have expressed their discontent on various social platforms.

Some viewers are criticizing the American accents in The Odyssey teaser trailer

Despite the brief snippets presented in The Odyssey’s trailer, it has sparked lively discussions among movie enthusiasts as they eagerly await Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece. Notably, dialogue within the film appears to be delivered in each actor’s native accent. For example, Tom Holland portrays Telemachus and Jon Bernthal engages with him using their normal accents in a short scene.

Despite some social media users expressing concern, it’s unlikely that The Odyssey will have characters speaking in period-authentic accents, and this shouldn’t be a significant issue for most people. After all, considering those involved in the movie’s production, it seems rather impractical to get overly upset about this detail.

Why the criticism makes absolutely no sense

Many viewers have noted that the voices in The Odyssey don’t match what they usually expect from ancient Greek stories on screen. However, this assumption is often misleading. When we imagine old movies set in ancient Greece, we tend to think of British accents or something similar, which isn’t necessarily more accurate.

Films such as 300, Clash of the Titans, and others are often categorized as timeless in their genre due to distinct accents that while not entirely American, aren’t authentically Greek either. Achieving authenticity when it comes to ancient Greek accents is challenging. While we have some understanding of how the language was pronounced based on words and pronunciations discovered over time, there’s no definitive way to know what an actual ancient Greek accent sounded like since it remains unknown.

Regarding Christopher Nolan’s choice of accents in his films, it’s reasonable to assume that he has a valid justification behind this decision. In cinema, style and acting performance frequently take precedence over authentic accents. Given Nolan’s status as a renowned filmmaker, it seems plausible that he carefully pondered the accent issue in The Odyssey and likely opted for a specific reason to not use full fake accents.

The Odyssey is set to release on July 17, 2026.
