Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals alternate happy ending for Squid Game Season 3

In a chat with Vanity Fair, filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed his decision to modify the finale of Squid Game Season 3.

As suggested by Hwang Dong-hyuk, an alternate ending initially envisioned Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, surviving the games. He expressed this idea as a “happy ending” where Gi-hun would travel to America to see his daughter. However, during the writing process, Dong-hyuk pondered about the message he wanted to convey in the final season and ultimately decided that the current ending was more fitting.

Filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed concerns about contemporary issues such as economic disparity, environmental catastrophe, and conflict, noting that young people are increasingly losing faith in a brighter tomorrow. With this in mind, he sought to offer a glimmer of hope through his work. He explained, “I felt it was high time for us to make sacrifices and seriously consider how we can shape a better future.” This perspective is reflected in the storyline, where a baby stands as a symbol of hope and the next generation. By having an older character like Gi-hun selflessly risk his life to save this child, Hwang intended to underscore the importance of sacrificing for the sake of giving the next generation a better world. This, he believed, was the most fitting conclusion for the series.

In the alternative scenario, Dong-hyuk imagined that not only Gi-hun and the baby but also other significant characters would make it through.
