Nintendo has publicly revealed a detailed eight-minute preview trailer for Donkey Kong Bananza, an eagerly awaited 3D platforming journey coming to Nintendo Switch on July 17th. This comprehensive display offers enthusiasts their broadest view yet of the game’s characters, functions, and subterranean environment, and based on early reactions, Bananza could potentially become one of the most creative platformers on the Switch yet.
A New Kind of Jungle Adventure – Beneath the Surface
In contrast to Donkey Kong’s usual jungle escapades, the game Bananza turns things upside down by having DK explore beneath the surface. The trailer opens with a powerful punch (literally) as Donkey Kong bursts into an enigmatic underground world full of destructible landscapes, ancient artifacts, and hidden perils. However, he doesn’t venture through this wild realm on his own.
In an innovative twist for the Donkey Kong series, the original character Pauline from Donkey Kong and the mayor of Super Mario Odyssey’s New Donk City is making her debut as a playable ally. This new version of Pauline is a 13-year-old prodigy with an incredible vocal power that can shatter rocks and grant Donkey Kong unique abilities through her melodies – these transformations are known as “Bananza Transformations”.
These transformations give DK enhanced capabilities, including:
- Zebra Bananza – Boosted speed and reflexes
- Kong Bananza – Raw power to tear down massive obstacles
- Ostrich Bananza – Long-distance jumping and aerial traversal
As I delve deeper into this game, I’m discovering a dynamic array of moves that’s not just about punching and kicking – it’s a strategic dance, weaving together elements of exploration akin to a Metroidvania adventure with the rhythmic chaos of music.
Smashing Through The Layers
In the trailer, we see a variety of stunning landscapes, from lush forests to sparkling caves and fortresses covered in ice – all tied together by a vast, interconnected underground world. The main focus of Donkey Kong Bananza is exploration, offering environmental challenges, paths that can be broken open, and hidden treasures that uncover characters, bonuses, and power-ups.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Nintendo has verified we can burst through walls, delve downwards, and essentially redesign the environment at our whim. They refer to this as “revolutionary exploration,” and I can’t wait to dive in!

Meet the Underground Cast
During their expedition toward the enigmatic Planet Core, believed to fulfill any desire, DK and Pauline will run into a diverse group of inhabitants living beneath the surface. Included among these characters:
- Poppy Kong – A clever, gadget-toting simian who offers tech tips
- Grumpy Kong – The curmudgeonly elder with cryptic advice
- Void Kong – The villainous CEO of Void Company, a ruthless capitalist driven by greed, who leads an industrial expedition to reach the Planet Core first.
Void Kong is not your ordinary villain; he embodies a broader critique of exploitation and resource depletion, reflecting actual global issues with a playful yet poignant approach.
Team Up in Two-Player Mode
Among the most exciting revelations in the trailer is the addition of a cooperative multiplayer feature. This means two players can join forces, either in person or online. One player takes on the role of Donkey Kong, directly controlling him, while the other assumes the character of Pauline, who rides on DK’s back. With her voice attacks, Pauline can stun enemies and influence the environment.
With the improved precision of Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy-Cons, gamers can precisely target vocal blasts or replicate surrounding landscapes for tactical environmental impacts.
Multiple multiplayer options are supported:
- Local Co-Op on one system
- GameShare Local on two Switch 2 consoles
- GameShare + GameChat Online, for remote play with voice communication

Accessibility for All
Nintendo has made it easier than ever for both young and less experienced gamers to enjoy Donkey Kong Bananza, by introducing an Assist Mode. This feature alleviates the pressure, allowing them to savor the gameplay without undue stress. Some of its key features are:
- Auto-path guidance
- Aiming assist
- Regenerating health
- Reduced incoming damage
Each feature can be turned on or off independently, enabling players to tailor their gameplay according to their proficiency.
In about two weeks from now, Donkey Kong Bananza is taking shape to go beyond being merely a new Donkey Kong game; it’s poised to redefine the essence of a DK title. With its innovative setting, an assertive co-lead character in Pauline, intricate exploration aspects, and groundbreaking cooperative dynamics, Bananza appears ready to delve deeper than expected.
According to the latest preview, Donkey Kong Bananza appears to be one of Nintendo’s most innovative and daring platform games since Super Mario Odyssey. With the menacing presence of Void Kong, it seems that a simple bunch of bananas won’t cut it to save the day.
