According to reports, Netflix has apparently terminated “The Residence” following its first season. This Shondaland production, a comedic murder mystery that debuted on March 20, 2025, featured Uzo Aduba and Giancarlo Esposito as part of an extensive cast.
Regrettably, even with renowned cast members and Shonda Rhimes’ production company’s support, the series won’t be renewed for another season on the streaming service.
Why did The Residence Season 2 get canceled?
According to reports, it’s said that the second season of the comedy thriller “The Residence” was unfortunately not renewed because its ratings were not high enough. A Deadline article suggests that the timing of its release might have contributed to its low ratings, as it competed against Netflix’s limited series “Adolescence,” which gained immense popularity and ruled the viewership charts for several weeks, essentially overshadowing “The Residence.
One possible reason for the cancellation of “The Residence” could be its high production costs due to its intricate setup. The series boasted an extensive use of visual effects, as well as Netflix’s largest White House replica ever constructed, which was made up of seven different stages, adorned with 10 miles of molding, 200 functional doors, and a total weight of 144,000 pounds in flooring.
To discuss a possible renewal of the series, there were numerous discussions about reducing costs for season 2 in the production team. A proposal was made suggesting these cuts. Regrettably, the creators of the show were unable to implement this strategy. It’s worth mentioning that Netflix has not provided any specific reasons for canceling the show.
This week, it’s regrettable to note that among the Netflix series that were canceled includes “Pulse.” This medical drama starring Willa Fitzgerald and Colin Woodell will not be coming back for its second season.
In terms of audience engagement, both Pulse and The Residence held their ground quite well against other newcomers. It’s been said that these dramas managed to secure a spot in Netflix’s global Top 10 for an impressive four weeks straight. What’s more, Pulse reached the third position with a staggering 8.5 million views at its peak.
In contrast, The Residence managed to secure the second spot with a total of 8.8 million views. Nevertheless, these two shows that were ultimately cancelled couldn’t quite match up to the success of the more recently renewed Ransom Canyon. Interestingly, Ransom Canyon had also spent four weeks within the Top 10 and peaked at number 2 as well, garnering an impressive 9.4 million views during its first full week on air.
There’s a diverse range of opinions among fans about the termination of “The Residence”. Some spectators believe that the Shondaland creation works best as a restricted series, while others yearn for the gripping narrative to extend past the confines of the White House setting.
A Redditor commented, “The Residence was well-made. Even though it got cancelled, it managed to answer everything by the end of its season.” Another user pointed out, “The Residence had the potential to be an excellent series. It had a talented cast, a skilled creator, and an intriguing concept.
