The Fantastic Four: First Steps Gets Rated Exactly Like Superman

The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero film, titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, has been given its Motion Picture Association (MPA) rating and it differs from the one that Deadpool and Wolverine received prior to their release. It’s worth noting that the latter project, set for U.S. release on July 26, 2024, was rated R.

Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie officially rated PG-13

The Movie Rating Association (MPA) has classified The Fantastic Four: First Steps as PG-13. Given that nearly all Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects in the last 17 years, except Deadpool and Wolverine, have received the same rating from the MPA, this isn’t surprising. Interestingly, Superman, James Gunn’s upcoming movie which marks the debut of the DC Universe on the big screen, has also been rated PG-13. Both films are set to be released just two weeks apart.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “A game with a PG-13 rating is one that adults should consider carefully before letting younger gamers play, since some content within might not be suitable for kids under 13.

In the upcoming phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps” will be the first project. Given the less than satisfactory performances of earlier live-action adaptations based on the Fantastic Four comic books, there’s a significant expectation that this new movie will do well at the box office. Marvel Studios has spent considerable time perfecting this upcoming film, and given their strategic approach, it seems they have long-term plans for the superhero family. As such, the movie’s success is crucial for their future endeavors with the Fantastic Four.

It’s reasonable to assume that the studio understands that many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are young, and the PG-13 rating ensures the film can connect with a large number of them.

Matt Shakman is the one responsible for directing “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which marks the 37th appearance of this superhero team on the big screen within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The main characters in this film are Pedro Pascal portraying Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025.
