Thug Life OTT Release: Kamal Haasan’s gangster saga debuts online in less than 8 weeks after poor box office run

The movie “Thug Life,” featuring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan, premiered in theaters on June 5th. There was much anticipation for its success and groundbreaking performance. Unfortunately, despite being directed by Mani Ratnam, the film missed the target and turned out to be a massive letdown at the box office.

Originally, the creators promised the movie wouldn’t be available for streaming until it had been playing in theaters for eight weeks. However, Thug Life has unexpectedly appeared on an online streaming platform.

When and where to watch Thug Life

The creators of Thug Life previously announced a partnership with Netflix for their streaming rights, and that collaboration is now live, starting July 2, 2025, on Netflix’s platform.

In a post about X, Netflix titled it as “Experience the power of Rangaraya Sakthivel-kumar through this gripping series. Thug Life is now available to stream on Netflix in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

In essence, the plot of Thug Life centers around a gangster called Rangaraaya Sakthivel. During a violent confrontation with another crime lord, he inadvertently takes responsibility for an orphaned child named Amaran, believing him to be his rescuer’s son.

Eventually, Sakthivel takes on Amaran as his recognized child. In the passage of time, following Sakthivel’s release from jail, he encounters a transformed political landscape within his realm, with a mature Amaran being regarded as the imminent ruler.

Without Sakthivel realizing it, Amaran is influenced by deceptions and concocts a scheme to dethrone the former and take his life. Initially believing he has succeeded, Sakthivel later exacts a frosty vengeance on the betrayer, someone he thought was a trusted ally.

The movie showcases several well-known Tamil film stars, such as Kamal Haasan, Simbu (Silambarasan TR), Aishwarya Lekshmi, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Rohit Saraf, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, and others.

The movie is helmed by Mani Ratnam, with Kamal Haasan taking on production duties under his own banner, Raaj Kamal Films. The enchanting music is the work of AR Rahman.
