Denim Tears is about to debut their latest line called “5th Quarter,” which draws inspiration from the powerful bond between African-Americans and the sport of basketball.

Tremaine Emory’s concept for the collection focuses on a less-discussed, seldom-portrayed phase in an athlete’s journey – the time when they navigate their identity amidst their accomplishments while confronting what awaits them off the court. The 5th Quarter project illuminates this complex realm, showcasing both the emotional and cultural significance of sports.

The assortment showcases appreciation for individuals such as Rafer “Skip 2 My Lou” Alston and coach John Thompson Jr., recognizing their significant influence, not only on the court but off it as well. Their enduring legacies are reflected in the clothing items – from hoodies and trousers adorned with African Mudcloth designs to unique accessories like reinterpreted sideline towels and a Basketball Net Pendant.

In a visual sense, this collection follows a minimalist style, yet it’s richly layered with intricate design elements that subtly convey its profound meaning. A striking ensemble combines a Denim Tears jersey with clean white basketball shorts, adorned with patterns reminiscent of mudcloth running along the side and waist. This attire is complemented by a tailored khaki dress suit, featuring a belt made in the traditional African mudcloth pattern to accentuate the waist – merging athletic history with cultural significance. The back of the jersey proudly displays the name “THOMPSON” in bold letters, honoring John Thompson Jr., the first Black coach to win an NCAA championship.

The 5th Quarter collection features a variety of items, including headwear, outerwear, accessories, and athletic styles. Each piece tells a larger story. A sneak peek was given at Dover Street Market Paris on June 28-29, but the complete collection will be accessible online at Denim Tears’ website starting July 4th, and also available in-store at Africa Diaspora Goods in New York City.
