South Park Creators Blast Paramount as Season 27 Release Date Delayed

After postponing the release of South Park Season 27, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have spoken out critically against the network responsible for the delay.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the debut of South Park Season 27 on Comedy Central has been shifted from July 9 to July 23. Within an hour, creators Parker and Stone launched a fierce attack against Paramount, criticizing their proposed merger with Skydance in the process.

In response to Comedy Central’s press release about the shift in South Park’s premiere date, Trey Parker and Matt Stone expressed their displeasure by stating, “This merger is a mess and it’s causing problems for South Park. We are currently working on new episodes, and we hope the fans will find a way to see them.

Why was South Park Season 27 delayed?

It seems that there are two potential causes behind the delay of South Park. Firstly, Paramount’s upcoming merger with Skydance has been in progress for approximately a year now. Matt Stone and Trey Parker did not provide specific details about this merger in their statement. Since Comedy Central is owned by Paramount, this merger may impact the future of South Park.

The lack of clarity about the situation has resulted in job losses, postponements, and scrapped plans at Paramount. However, the FCC’s approval for the deal is yet to come through. July 7th remains the tentative date for finalizing the agreement, but it might be extended. The resolution of Paramount’s lawsuit with President Trump paves the way for the merger to potentially be completed.

The second factor causing the delay in Season 27 is the negotiation of South Park’s streaming rights. The $500 million streaming agreement between South Park and HBO Max ended last week, and while discussions about an extension are ongoing, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have yet to decide on a new platform for South Park’s streaming.

It appears that the rights for broadcasting this content without exclusivity have allegedly been offered to businesses such as Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. Creators Parker and Stone have claimed that Paramount’s president, Jeff Shell, has meddled in these discussions. It seems plausible that Paramount aims to keep South Park available only on their streaming platform, Paramount+.

More than two years have passed since the conclusion of South Park’s Season 26. The upcoming Season 27 of South Park will air on Wednesday, July 23rd, starting at 10:00 p.m., Eastern and Pacific Time, exclusively on Comedy Central.
