Olivia Munn talks about struggling with Trichotillomania
Olivia Munn candidly shared about the compulsive hair-pulling disorder called trichotillomania.
In a recent Armchair Expert podcast featuring Dax Shepard, the guest opened up about developing her condition during her relationship with Chris Pine, and how the celebrity gossip industry exacerbated the situation.
Munn shared that she frequently plucks her eyelashes and went into great detail about the urge. “There’s a strange feeling,” she noted, “almost like it might not be genuine, but I get this sensation of ‘Oh, this eyelash seems ready to pop out,’ even when it isn’t.” She continued, “As soon as you remove it, there’s a fleeting moment of pain. Then there’s a sense of accomplishment and instant remorse.
In 2009, while dating Chris Pine, Olivia Munn began noticing the onset of Trichotillomania. During a small event, she humorously requested the most unattractive dress from The Daily Show’s costume team, and they presented her with a blue prom dress adorned with large pom poms. She joked, “I wondered if I could make it onto the worst dressed list,” and to her surprise, she succeeded! Her reaction was one of disbelief, as she felt recognized even with such an unconventional choice. It was quite thrilling for her.
Following her departure from Pine’s residence, photographers captured images of her. These photos were later uploaded online, along with comments. Munn recalled some commentators saying, “I believe she orchestrated this. Who carries a clutch bag during the day?” This incident triggered her trichotillomania.
As a hairstyle enthusiast like me, you might not have heard of this yet, but there’s something called Trichotillomania that I wanted to share with you. It’s a unique mental health challenge where individuals feel an overpowering need to pull out their hair, frequently from the scalp, eyebrows, or eyelashes.
