James Gunn on What Superman’s Reaction to Meeting Batman Would Be

James Gunn recently gave us a sneak peek into how Superman could respond to coming across Batman in the latest DC Universe. In a recent chat, he dropped hints about a potential past interaction between these two legends, offered some intriguing insights into their relationship dynamics, and hinted that they might work together more closely than before.

James Gunn teases whether Superman has already met Batman

In an engaging chat with ExtraTV, as one enthusiastic about DC’s universe, I found myself thrilled by the tantalizing hint dropped by DC Studios co-head and Superman director, James Gunn. His suggestive comments sparked a flame of excitement within me, hinting at the possibility that the legendary figures, Superman and Batman, may have already intersected in the DC Universe!

In response to the question about how Superman might respond to meeting Batman, Gunn said, “Firstly, it’s uncertain if Superman has already encountered someone dressed as a bat. However, considering they both have unusual costumes and share an unconventional lifestyle, I believe he would view Batman as a fellow unique individual with a distinctive purpose.

In the upcoming Superman movie, it’s been established that the story starts with Superman three years into his superhero career. This implies that Batman might have been active at the same time, potentially even having a secret encounter. Gunn hinted that their interaction in the new DC Universe will portray a bond of mutual respect and camaraderie, much like their “World’s Finest” dynamic from various comic book storylines.

In their comic book adventures, Superman and Batman have moved from being somewhat mistrustful partners to good friends. Their initial meeting is famously depicted in Superman #76 (1952), where Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne discovered each other’s secret identities during a crisis on a ship. Subsequent stories in Man of Steel #3 (1986) and Justice League (New 52, 2011) have presented various versions of this meeting, typically portraying Batman as the more seasoned hero.

Previously, Gunn discussed Superman’s wardrobe choices with ComicBook.com, stating that the character will indeed don trunks. He disclosed that the lead actor, David Corenswet, played a significant role in making this decision, as he wanted to portray Superman as optimistic and not intimidating. Gunn clarified, “He dresses like a professional wrestler, but in a way that makes people feel safe around him.

Superman releases in theaters on July 11, 2025.
