The Bear Season 4’s Abby Elliott on Getting Fired From SNL

As Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto in The Bear Season 4, I’ve given yet another stellar performance, and now Abby Elliott, who plays Carmy Berzatto’s sister in the FX series, has stepped forward to share a piece of her past. Before donning this role, Abby was a significant part of Saturday Night Live’s cast. In a recent chat, she revealed insights about her departure from that iconic NBC show. At 38, she also described the emotions that came with saying goodbye to my cherished dream job.

Abby Elliott reflects on being fired from SNL before The Bear Season 4

In a recent conversation, the actress known for Odd Mom Out shared memories leading up to her departure from Saturday Night Live. She also mentioned that being let go was an extremely difficult situation for her.

Abby Elliott shared with The Independent her experience at work: “Every week brought a new chance for success or disappointment based on whether a sketch made it on air. If three weeks passed without a sketch, doubts would creep in: ‘Oh no, am I going to be let go?’… The constant fear of being fired was the worst-case scenario. Unfortunately, that’s what eventually happened.

On the live comedy series, Elliott excelled as a skilled impressionist, leaving everyone in awe. Her repertoire includes celebrities like Rachel Maddow and Angelina Jolie. Although she garnered global acclaim for her side-splitting performances on the show, the actress chose to part ways. Initially, she submitted her resignation to SNL’s head Lorne Michaels, but later withdrew it.

Abby Elliott remembered how Tina Fey (Michaels) chose to let her go from SNL. She commented, “I humbly returned asking to stay, but at the end of that season, Lorne said, ‘I’m afraid I have to release you.”’ Elliott later pondered that she decided to part ways with SNL when she understood that she wasn’t suited for the world of sketch comedy.

In 2008, Abby Elliott began working on NBC’s long-standing show. She left the show along with Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg in 2012. Later, in 2022, she joined the series The Bear and was recognized with a Golden Globe Award nomination for her portrayal of the Berzatto sister.
