The director of Top Gun: Maverick has hinted at a potential sequel to F1, after the closing moments of F1.

In this movie, Brad Pitt portrays Sonny Hayes, a seasoned Formula 1 racer who makes a comeback upon Ruben Cervantes’ (played by Javier Bardem) request, as he is the owner of APXGP. The climax sees him clinching victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. In a scene during the credits, Sonny appears in Baja, California, where he seeks employment with an off-road racing team. As the movie concludes, he’s back on the track, hinting at the possibility of further races and potentially a sequel.

In an interview with GQ, director Joseph Kosinski expressed that the audience will be left to interpret the ending. He believes the scene is purposefully ambiguous for both Sonny, Kate (portrayed by Kerry Condon), and Joshua, hinting at more stories of the APXGP team and Sonny Hayes’ future. However, the decision regarding further installments isn’t in his hands.

Furthermore, Kosinski has mentioned his interest in creating a joint project involving Days of Thunder and Formula One racing, should he be given the opportunity to collaborate with both Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Notably, Days of Thunder is a 1990 film where Cruise played Cole Trickle, a racer.

Joseph Kosinski mentioned in reference to this topic, “Currently, if a backstory were to be developed, it would likely revolve around Cole Trickle, Tom Cruise’s character from Days of Thunder. It’s suggested that he and Sonny Hayes had a history, possibly competing or encountering each other at some point in the past. I’ve even heard rumors about an intense go-kart race between these two on Interview with a Vampire, making one wonder if it would not be intriguing to witness them racing against each other on the track.
