Shubhanshu Shukla serves as a test pilot in the Indian Air Force and an astronaut with ISRO. He was the first out of four astronauts to journey into space for the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme, and is now involved in Axiom Mission 4.
Early Life & Education
Born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla completed his education at City Montessori School, Aliganj. The Kargil War of 1999 served as a source of inspiration for him to apply and subsequently pass the UPSC NDA (National Defence Academy) examination.
In 2005, he finished his military education at the National Defense Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
Afterward, he received an appointment in the aviation division and attended training at the Indian Air Force Training School. In June 2006, he was promoted to a fighter squadron within the Indian Air Force, assuming the position of Flying Officer.
Shubhanshu Shukla Career
Shubhanshu Shukla is a skilled military commander and seasoned aviator who has logged around 2,000 flight hours on various types of aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier 228, and An-32.
2019 saw Shubhanshu Shukla chosen to join the astronaut candidate pool, overseen by the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) – an organization functioning under the umbrella of the Indian Air Force – as part of India’s Human Spaceflight Programme.
Afterward, he found himself among the last four contenders selected by IAM and ISRO. In the year 2020, he embarked on a journey to Russia, where he underwent essential training together with three other selected astronauts at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.
In 2021, he completed his foundational training with success. Later, he returned to India and began advanced training at the Astronaut Training Center in Bangalore. During this period, he also earned a Master of Technology degree in Aerospace Engineering from IISc Bangalore.
27th February, 2024 marked the day when the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, revealed his name as part of the astronaut team for India’s inaugural human space mission. This announcement was made at ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.
At present, Shubhanshu serves as the pilot during the ongoing Axiom Mission 4, targeting the International Space Station. The launch of this mission took place on June 25, 2025, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
He forms part of a team, headed by Commander Peggy Whitson, that also includes mission specialists Slawomir Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu. The Indian astronaut Prasanth Nair serves as the standby crew member; both underwent training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Personal Life
Shubhanshu Shukla is wedded to Kamna Mishra, a former schoolmate turned dentist, with whom he shares a son.
Shambhu Dayal Shukla, his dad, has stepped down from his job in the government, whereas Asha Shukla, his mom, looks after the domestic affairs. He’s the youngest among the trio of siblings.
