The Dark Souls series by FromSoftware shares a common theme: the destructive consequences of immense power, as depicted through crumbled kingdoms, fallen monarchs, and the enigmatic Gaping Dragon. It’s not surprising that a character playing Elden Ring under the name Nightreign also experienced divine-like power before their downfall due to arrogance.
According to Automaton’s observation, a player named mintius accumulated damage repeatedly, reaching a divine state first and then descending into wretchedness.
Mintius utilized the Marais Executioner Sword, imbued with the “House Marais Power” passive ability, to carry out his actions. This enhancement boosts your attack strength when defeating opponents and seems to have no limit. Usually, this isn’t an issue because Nightreign is a time-bound game, but FromSoftware apparently failed to anticipate a player might want to engage in MMO-style grinding against Wormface’s endless horde of nuisances.
It appears that the creatures summoned by Wormface contribute to the stacking damage boost of the Marais Executioner Sword, as mintius found out through his experiment: “I fought against Wormface’s minions for approximately an hour while wielding the Marais Executioner Sword. After defeating 725 enemies, my attack power surpassed the visible damage limit of 9,999.
From what it seems, by “visible damage cap”, Mintius might be referring to the displayed damage on their in-game equipment screen (as shown in the screenshot). This is because they mention dealing significantly more damage than what’s visible. In simpler terms, when they last saw the damage value for the Executioner Sword it was 63,375. After defeating enemy number 727, they suddenly couldn’t inflict any damage at all and their character perished.
As a gamer, I’ve come across this issue before: it’s like when a game glitches because it can’t handle numbers getting too big—a classic programming hiccup known as integer overflow. You see, computers aren’t built to count upwards without limits; they can get close, but not quite to infinity. When games are coded to count, they use something called an ‘integer’, which works fine for counting into the billions, but it reaches its limit eventually.
If the count surpasses this limit, the game might become unstable or stuck in a repeating loop, leaving you on the level selection screen for an extended period. It’s possible that there are some complex programming issues with Nightreign that caused it to malfunction and make Mintius invulnerable.
In fact, it appears that the overflow issue only occurs with that stacking damage buff, so Mintius is exploring alternative solutions for fixing the Icarus-like damage. They’ve informed Automaton that their upcoming test involves jumping from a high altitude onto a Flame Chariot, which could potentially boost their DPS even more. And so, the testing process goes on.
