In previous times, filmmakers Ram Gopal Varma and Mani Ratnam often worked together on projects. But just recently, Varma expressed his dislike for movies produced by his fellow director, particularly the renowned film “Nayakan,” starring Kamal Haasan, which he criticized.
Furthermore, Ram Gopal Varma mentioned that Mani Ratnam, too, does not like some of his movies.
Why don’t Ram Gopal Varma and Mani Ratnam like each other’s films?
During a recent conversation on the MPower Podcast, renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma openly admitted that he and fellow director Mani Ratnam have differing opinions when it comes to each other’s movies.
Regardless of their history of working together and their individual fame as filmmakers, the director of Sarkaar 3 discussed the nature of their relationship.
In simpler terms, Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) expressed that he and Mani Ratnam have a mutual dislike for each other’s movies, which is the essence of their professional dynamic.
RGV expresses dislike for Kamal Haasan’s Nayakan
Speaking further, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma shared his thoughts on the renowned film Nayakan by Mani Ratnam, which featured Kamal Haasan in the lead role. He went on to express that while the acting in the movie was commendable, he personally wasn’t a fan of it.
Later, he reminisced about his history with the director of Thug Life and asserted that Mani Ratnam played no significant role in shaping his own career trajectory. RGV made it clear that while he admires Mani Ratnam personally, their creative perspectives on movies are quite distinct.
In their own words, “We get along well as individuals, and both had a desire to create our own movies. We didn’t always agree on ideas, so we each pursued our own projects. He has his distinctive approach, while I have my unique style. As such strong-willed creatives, it seems collaboration between us may not have been possible.
Mani Ratnam’s recent debacle with Thug Life
Presently, Mani Ratnam finds himself in the limelight following the underwhelming performance of his latest directorial venture, Thug Life, at the box office. This marks his reunion with Kamal Haasan since their collaboration on Nayakan, but unfortunately, the movie fell short of its projected success and struggled to surpass the 100 crore mark globally.
