Hailing from Buenos Aires, born on June 21, 1932 as Boris Claudio Schifrin, his musical roots were in classical studies. He further refined his skills under the tutelage of Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory. Jazz greats such as Charlie Parker and Louis Armstrong sparked his inspiration, leading him to return to Argentina and establish a big band.
1958 saw Dizzy Gillespie extending an invitation to Schifrin, who subsequently joined Gillespie’s team as a pianist and composer in the United States. During this stint, Schifrin created two highly-regarded pieces: “Gillespiana” and “The New Continent.
