Capcom originally considered making Leon the protagonist of Resident Evil Requiem

In the Capcom Spotlight, it was discussed how the studio has been working on Resident Evil 9, known as Resident Evil Requiem. They shared that initially, they considered Leon Kennedy as the main character for RE9, but ultimately decided against it because his personality didn’t align well with the narrative they had envisioned.

According to Game Director Koshi Nakanishi during the recent Capcom Spotlight, there had been plans to feature Leon as the main character. However, creating a horror game centered on him proved challenging due to his unyielding demeanor and lack of fearfulness, which makes him an ill-suited protagonist for such a genre.

Capcom decided to create Grace Ashcroft, an FBI agent who is easily startled, primarily because they desired a character who would encounter the narrative in a way that mirrors the player’s perspective, as she is introverted and prone to fear. (Nakanishi’s explanation)

In February 2026, when the game is released, you’ll have the opportunity to follow Grace Ashcroft’s tale from two different viewpoints: one where you personally take on the role of Grace, and another where you observe her story unfold as a third-person narrator.
