How did Game of Thrones inspire the DCU?
In a recent conversation with Omelete (through Comic Book Movie), Gunn shared insights into what’s inspiring the DC Universe. Interestingly, he disclosed that DC Studios is primarily looking to Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series for guidance in shaping their content.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Game of Thrones, both the series and the books, are serving as our guiding light for the development of the DC Universe (DCU), as expressed by Gunn. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which feels like our world with cities like New York and superheroes intertwined within it, the DCU represents a distinct universe. It’s not just similar, but slightly different and transformed in its own unique way.
As an ardent admirer, I’m happy to share that Gunn also delved into discussing his sources of inspiration outside his own projects. Among these are renowned franchises like Star Wars, which he appreciates for their skillful creation of interconnected stories set within the same universe, a technique that truly captivates me.
Additionally, I find myself greatly influenced by narratives like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and others that weave multiple tales within a single universe. This isn’t about confining myself to a singular narrative.
Next month, Superman’s first film within the DC Universe will make its premiere, with Gunn having the opportunity to unveil it. The release date for this movie is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
