In “Willie and Jimmy Dean,” Brandon Flynn assumes the part of the tragic figure, portraying a young, queer man immersed in love, rather than a symbol of traditional masculinity, while dealing with fame and the secretive nature of Hollywood during the 1950s.
A New Lens On A Hollywood Legend
The iconic figure of James Dean, known for his rebellious image and everlasting appeal, is set to receive a fresh perspective in an upcoming biopic. Instead of focusing on his public persona, the film, titled “Willie and Jimmy Dean,” will delve into more personal aspects. The role of James Dean has been assigned to Brandon Flynn, famously recognized for his performances in “13 Reasons Why.” This new movie is based on the memoir “Surviving James Dean” by William Bast.
The Story Behind The Man
Instead of delving into James Dean’s brief yet legendary acting journey, this film dives deep into my personal connection with William Bast – my roommate, creative collaborator, and as he himself put it, my lover. Our paths crossed at UCLA, we shared a roof, and our bond remained unbroken until his untimely death in a car accident at just 24 years old. Our relationship, hidden during an era when queer connections were either invisible or perilous, forms the core of this narrative.
Deconstructing The Myth
This project captivates because it challenges the common perceptions about James Dean, who was often portrayed as the embodiment of traditional masculinity. For years, he was depicted as calm, aloof, smoking a cigarette, and attracting countless women. However, this image wasn’t organic; it was carefully constructed, leaving out significant aspects. One such aspect that many may not realize is that Dean had a close, potentially romantic relationship with another man. His sexuality has been hinted at for decades, but it was seldom discussed openly. The film doesn’t sensationalize this part of his life or present it as a surprise. Instead, it casually includes it and underscores the ease with which entire facets of a person can vanish when they don’t align with the idealized image society chooses to remember.
What We Know About The Cast And Release
The movie details are still under wraps. As of now, a release date hasn’t been set, and the remainder of the cast members are yet to be revealed. However, one thing we can confirm is that Brandon Flynn has been selected to portray James Dean. Given his striking resemblance to the iconic actor and being part of the LGBTQ+ community himself, he seems like an excellent fit for the role. He’s expected to infuse the subtlety and emotion this story requires.
