Despite the buzz surrounding it and an impressive lineup of top-tier actors, Mani Ratnam’s latest film “Thug Life” underperformed at the box office when it hit theaters.
Despite rumors that the movie’s creators may be planning an early release on a streaming platform, it appears the film has suffered yet another significant setback.
Thug Life faced heavy fine from National Multiplex Association?
According to an article in The Hindu, Thug Life has been heavily fined by the National Multiplex Association due to a contract violation. Since the film didn’t meet expectations, their initial 8-week agreement was altered, and the digital release date was brought forward ahead of schedule.
In the past, it was a dream come true when the National Multiplex Association agreed to screen our movie in their theaters under certain terms. But as fate would have it, the twists and turns life takes led them to impose a significant fine of 25 million rupees on us for breaking the contract. As an ardent fan, it’s hard not to feel the sting of this turn of events.
Netflix deal re-negotiated for Thug Life
Meanwhile, it’s important to note that Thug Life is currently in negotiations with Netflix over their OTT partnership due to a change in terms. The previous agreement, which involved streaming through Netflix, needed to be re-evaluated and renegotiated at a lower price point compared to the initial deal.
For those unfamiliar, the first agreement with Netflix was signed at an impressive cost of approximately INR 130 crores.
Thug Life faced ban in Karnataka owing to Kamal Haasan’s statement
One factor that may have impacted Thug Life’s poor performance at the box office was the prohibition of its theatrical release in Karnataka.
In my commitment to upholding respect and understanding, I found myself in a situation where the movie I was involved with was not allowed to be released before its premiere by the Karnataka Film Chamber. This decision came as a result of some remarks made by Kamal Haasan that seemed to offend the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking community.
Thug Life’s final box office collection so far
As a committed cinema enthusiast, I’m compelled to share that my recent choice, the gripping gangster action thriller, sadly concluded its cinematic journey with a disappointing global box office collection of approximately Rs. 93 crores.
The movie failed to reach even the modest 100 million rupee mark at the box office, something that many high-value Kollywood projects typically achieve quickly. Now, Thug Life can be compared to Kanguva, another Tamil film with a poor performance history.
