8 years ago, on February 16, 2017, the game ‘theHunter: Call of the Wild‘ was released. Just recently, after a brief wait of 8 days, the developers at Expansive Worlds introduced a Canadian map named Askiy Ridge. This latest game preserve, located in Alberta, showcases 19 species (with 8 exclusive to the map) and 4 distinct biomes. I’ve been exploring Askiy Ridge extensively over the past few days and firmly believe that Canada would have been a perfect destination for ‘theHunter’ about 8 years ago.
It’s clear that my dedication to theHunter doesn’t match up to many of you. A glance at Steam shows I’ve logged 180 hours, but I haven’t explored all the latest maps and don’t engage in Diamond farming. My gaming sessions can stretch over a year or more. However, I do make sure to collect all DLC content except for cosmetic items that don’t appeal to me. My playstyle typically involves exploring a new map for a few days, hunting at random and completing the missions associated with each location. I also enjoy taking leisurely strolls up mountains just to appreciate the scenic vistas.
Among my most remarkable experiences in The Hunter has been my time spent at Askiy Ridge, surpassed only by the occasion when I bagged two Diamonds within just five minutes. While it’s true that map aesthetics are becoming more captivating as technology advances, Askiy Ridge itself plays a significant role in its charm. This expansive region encompasses no less than four distinct biomes, from snow-capped mountains to frost-kissed grasslands. There’s something truly magical about spotting a light in the distance at dusk, thinking it’s an unattainable area or distant city lights, only to discover that it’s a distant structure you can actually explore. Askiy Ridge, much like other maps in The Hunter, is vast indeed.
Among the new wildlife spotted at Askiy Ridge are the Dusky Goose, North American Beaver, Northern Pintail, Manitoban Elk, Snow Goose, Wood Bison, Wood Duck, and Woodland Caribou. So far, the Manitoban Elk has been my preferred animal to hunt, but I don’t have a favorite per se. I usually hunt whatever crosses my path instead of focusing on specific hunting zones for rare finds or their different versions.
Although I enjoy hunting in Canada, there comes a time when I’ll bid farewell to The Hunter once more. The game has its charm, but I find it hard to engage with its gameplay mechanics beyond the mission-based objectives on each map. Scoring in the hunt doesn’t appeal to me, and the effort needed to accumulate Diamonds for my lodge seems disproportionate to the rewards. Instead, I prefer games that focus more on survival aspects. If The Hunter resonates with your gaming style, then by all means, continue exploring this beautiful Alberta wilderness.
