Over the recent years, PlayStation Plus has been moving towards a more comparable structure with Xbox Game Pass, featuring an expansive collection of titles that regularly join and leave the platform. Yet, in contrast to Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus does not provide first-party games at their initial release on the subscription service.
Although some believe that releasing PS Plus on Day One could potentially expand the reach of games like Concord, Sony firmly maintains that they will not make their first-party games available on the service within a year of their release date.
PS Plus won’t become Game Pass
During an interview with Game File, Sony’s Vice President of Global Services, Nick Maguire, clarified that Sony has no plans to make any of its significant game releases available on their subscription service for free within a year or more following the titles’ initial launch.
The PlayStation executive clarified that we’ve consistently followed our approach, avoiding simultaneous releases. Instead, we focus on finding around four to five indie games for same-day, same-platform release. This strategy, combined with bringing out games when they’re a year or more old, has been effective in managing our platform.
Rather than focusing primarily on high-end Sony titles, the company is dedicated to regularly introducing independent games to the service on the same day of their release for players. Additionally, PlayStation continues to strive towards adding at least one classic game from its PlayStation Classics collection to the PS Plus service each month.
Recently, some gamers have found Sony’s handling of PlayStation Classics on PS4 and PS5 to be frustrating, as several first-party games have been taken off the service recently. For instance, Resistance series and Infamous Second Son were withdrawn only a few months back, and Maguire’s explanation hasn’t provided much reassurance.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that our PlayStation library spans an impressive 80 different game collections! To maintain this vibrant ecosystem, we’re always on the lookout for fresh content. This might involve rotating some games in and out occasionally. The goal is to keep things engaging, introduce players to new titles, and help them discover hidden gems in our catalog!
Despite significant price increases for both goods and services over the last few months, as well as a rise in console prices, PlayStation Plus is thriving more than ever. Interestingly, even with this increase, Sony has announced that further price modifications will be made due to a growing number of players opting for the higher-priced tiers of PS Plus, seeking access to an expanded library of games and freebies.
