At 77 years old, renowned writer Stephen King still plays a significant role in shaping today’s popular culture, with his lengthiest novel, “The Stand,” being the most recent of his works to be turned into a movie. As per the latest updates, Paramount Pictures has tapped Doug Liman, who is well-known for his work on offbeat action films, to direct the cinematic adaptation of the 1978 version of “The Stand.
Doug Liman to direct a movie based on Stephen King’s The Stand for Paramount
As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Paramount Pictures is collaborating with the director of Edge of Tomorrow to bring Stephen King’s epic masterpiece, The Stand, to our movie screens. This novel, the longest ever penned by the 12-time Bram Stoker Award winner, promises a cinematic experience like no other.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Doug Liman not only assumes the director’s role for the project but will also produce it together with Tyler Thompson from Cross Creek Pictures. Written in 1978 and later revised in 1990, Stephen King’s longest novel, “The Stand,” clocks in at an impressive 1,152 pages as part of his distinguished body of work.
In a world reimagined after a catastrophic pandemic, the narrative centers around the chaos left behind, as vast numbers of people perished. The few who survived banded together to create separate communities, each led by a charismatic figurehead. As time passes, these settlements encounter conflicts, eventually leading to confrontations among them. The climax is a classic struggle between righteousness and wickedness, reminiscent of ancient battles.
Up until now, Stephen King’s novel “The Stand” has resulted in two television miniseries productions. In 1994, Mick Garris oversaw the first adaptation for ABC, featuring notable actors like Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, and Jamey Sheridan portraying significant characters. Critics generally appreciated Mick Garris’ interpretation of King’s dystopian story. However, the 2020 version of “The Stand,” produced by Paramount+ and starring James Marsden, did not receive the same level of positive feedback.
For the very first time, Stephen King’s novel “The Stand” will be used as the basis for a full-length movie. Reports suggest that director Doug Liman intends to present the story in a standalone film, rather than dividing it into multiple movies. As of now, Paramount has not disclosed any information about the cast or the release date for this cinematic adaptation of the novel.
