Wanted 2: James McAvoy Sequel Gets Exciting Update From Writer

There’s fresh optimism for the continuation of “Wanted 2,” a follow-up to the 2008 action-thriller featuring James McAvoy. Derek Haas, one of the writers, has confirmed that they have completed a script and shown enthusiasm about working with the original team again. However, Universal Studios has not yet given the go-ahead, but talks about the movie are still happening 17 years after its initial release.

Derek Haas really wants Wanted 2 to happen with James McAvoy

Reflecting on my chat with ScreenRant during the promotion of my latest Prime Video series, Countdown, I couldn’t help but express my lingering hope for Wanted 2. Despite a seventeen-year-long development hiatus, Michael Brandt and I penned a script that I believe remains quite strong. Here’s to hoping, James McAvoy, let’s revive the character of Wesley once more!

2008’s initial movie showcases James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson, who gained fame for portraying Professor X from the X-Men series and Kevin Wendell Crumb in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy. Additionally, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman graced the action-packed thriller, which was inspired by Mark Millar’s comic book series, albeit loosely.

Following the movie’s triumph at the box office, it’s said that Universal started working on a follow-up in 2011, with the return of Haas, Brandt, and director Timur Bekmambetov. Unfortunately, this project hit a roadblock and has been on hold ever since.

Haas conveyed to ScreenRant that it’s unwise to rule out anything in this industry, as he certainly cherished the process of creating “Wanted.” His statements indicate that a draft for “Wanted 2” has been finalized and suggest that the possibility of its production remains viable.

James McAvoy has expressed a desire to return to a project, as hinted by an interviewer who quoted him saying, “I believe he mentioned in a recent interview that he’s still very much interested, saying ‘Yeah, I’d still love to do it no matter what.'” McAvoy, known for his roles in big-budget films like the X-Men series and various genre movies, could potentially reprise his character if the sequel gets greenlit.

Although there’s been an expressed interest, it hasn’t been confirmed yet that Universal is resurrecting the Wanted project. For the moment, the project appears dormant, but due to recent comments by Haas and potential participation from McAvoy, a resumption of work is still a possibility.
