Actor Pedro Pascal, who played a role in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” acknowledges that some fans of Marvel weren’t thrilled about his casting as Reed Richards within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios announced that Pascal would take on the role of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, alongside Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, on Valentine’s Day 2024. The remaining cast members were revealed gradually over the following months, with Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson joining the production as Silver Surfer and Galactus.
Initially, it wasn’t just Pascal who was considered for the role of Reed Richards by Marvel. According to reports, Matt Smith, Adam Driver, Christopher Abbott, Jamie Dornan, and Jake Gyllenhaal were also in the running; they either had meetings with the studio or underwent screen tests for the part.
What did Pedro Pascal say about his MCU casting?
In an interview with Vanity Fair (through ComicBookMovie), Pascal openly acknowledged that he wasn’t the fans’ initial preference for Reed Richards. He expressed, “Sometimes you just can’t tell if people will be put off by your sincerity or not. I’ve been more conscious of fan disapproval over my casting than any other role I’ve taken on before. ‘He’s too old, he doesn’t fit, he needs to shave.’
Among the three concerns raised, it appears that Pascal’s decision to maintain a scruffy beard instead of being clean-shaven for the role of Reed Richards in First Steps has been the one causing the most debate among fans. Although Reed Richards often sports a beard in comic books, he is typically portrayed as clean-shaven on screen, making Pascal’s choice to keep his facial hair for the MCU version less popular with fans. Ultimately, it will be Pascal’s acting skills that will either endear him to fans or not. With The Fantastic Four: First Steps scheduled for release at the end of July, fans won’t have long to wait and see how Pascal compares to previous big-screen portrayals of Reed Richards.
115 minutes is the duration of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” directed by Matt Shakman, which is set to premiere in cinemas on July 25, 2025. This movie marks the beginning of Phase 6 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
