Pixar has shared details on its upcoming film releases, intending to launch both new creations and follow-ups for some well-known franchises.
What is Pixar’s new movie release schedule?
In a recent conversation with Fast Company, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer and director Pete Doctor shared their strategy for releasing one original movie followed by one sequel. This approach, as explained by Docter, enables the studio to keep producing fresh content while simultaneously satisfying fans with familiar elements, a delicate equilibrium he finds challenging.
Doctor stated that it’s crucial to figure out what people desire even before they realize it themselves, as otherwise, we might end up creating another Toy Story sequel unnecessarily.
Pixar’s recently released film titled Elio, came out June 20th, and serves as a sequel to the highly successful Inside Out. Regrettably, despite favorable critiques, Elio appears to be falling short at the ticket sales. Pete Docter, who directed the movie, didn’t elaborate on this issue specifically, but he did acknowledge the unpredictable aspect of earning money in filmmaking, stating that it costs just as much to produce hits as it does to create films that don’t meet expectations financially.
During challenging times, we strive to create movies guided by our instincts, said Docter. We must have faith in them because putting effort into a film, whether it’s profitable or not, requires the same amount of dedication. And, unfortunately, you can’t predict these outcomes. Sometimes, through lucky combinations, we find success.

After Elio, Pixar’s upcoming projects include Hoppers, an original film scheduled for release on March 6, 2026. Next up is Toy Story 5, due out on June 19, 2026, followed by the release of Gatto on June 18, 2027. Incredibles 3 is expected in 2028, and a sequel to the 2017 film Coco is planned for some time in 2029.
