Pedro Pascal Talks Reed Richards’ Weakness in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

In a recent chat, actor Pedro Pascal – set to portray Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic in the upcoming MCU film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” – mused on his character’s vulnerabilities. Known for his extraordinary intellect among Marvel Comics characters, previous on-screen versions of this character have consistently emphasized this trait.

Pedro Pascal says Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards could ‘miss a lot of little details’

During a recent interview, Pascal admitted that Reed Richards has a notable vulnerability. “That’s an insightful query,” he responded to Kino. “I believe when one’s mind is consistently preoccupied with the greater good, minor aspects can easily be overlooked. Paying attention to those small details is crucial for maintaining unity within the family,” Pascal continued.

According to Matt Shakman, who helms The Fantastic Four: First Steps, he described Reed earlier this month as a blend between Steve Jobs and Robert Oppenheimer. He emphasized that Reed often stands on the precipice, poised either to save the world or risk its destruction. (As reported by Variety)

In the same vein, it applies to Reed’s character in comic books too. As previously stated, Reed is among the smartest characters in Marvel Comics. Yet, he isn’t immune to errors that can result in catastrophic outcomes. For example, during the Civil War saga, Richards was part of the group who constructed a detention center in the Negative Zone. This facility was later used to imprison their own superhero comrades.

Several live-action versions of the character have delved into this facet of Reed’s personality. For instance, Ioan Gruffudd played Reed in the 2005 film Fantastic Four and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. In the 2015 reboot, Miles Teller took on the role. Moreover, John Krasinski portrayed a different version of the character in the 2022 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In a different universe or timeline from Earth-616 and the Sacred Timeline, Pascal’s character, Reed, is not present. Yet, it’s expected that Reed’s journey might intersect with the heroes of Earth-616 in Avengers: Doomsday.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025.
