Alcon Media Group, a self-governing movie and TV manufacturing business, aimed to acquire the film archive belonging to Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, who recently filed for bankruptcy protection in March.
In a legal dispute, Warner Bros. found themselves facing a lawsuit from Village Roadshow, who claimed breach of contract. This was due to Warner Bros. releasing the 2021 sci-fi sequel, “The Matrix Resurrections,” simultaneously on their streaming platform, Max, and in theaters on the same day, allegedly violating the agreed terms with Village Roadshow.
In the end, Warner Bros. was successful in arbitration, winning a reported amount of $125 million.
Consequently, various parties put forth proposals to acquire Village Roadshow’s movie collection, and in the end, Alcon emerged victorious from the intense competition.
From a dedicated cinephile’s perspective, the library under discussion is nothing short of colossal. As Variety puts it, this expansive collection encompasses an impressive 108 films, many of which have been jointly produced and funded in collaboration with Warner Brothers Pictures since 1997.
This library contains a selection of movies such as “Mad Max: Fury Road”, the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise, the “Matrix” trilogy, “Joker”, “Ready Player One”, “Sherlock Holmes”, and “Wonka”.
Besides the recently obtained collection from Village Roadshow library, Alcon also possesses its own archive of well-known films. This includes the revamped Garfield series, The Blind Side, Blade Runner 2049, Insomnia directed by Christopher Nolan, and Prisoners helmed by Denis Villanueve.
The bid for the Village Roadshow library was a major one for Alcon, coming in at $417.5 million.
With this recent purchase, Alcon will acquire not just Village Roadshow’s extensive film library, but also their income streams and distribution rights. Additionally, Alcon will obtain Village Roadshow’s movies still in production, as well as both scripted and unscripted TV shows that were being developed.
Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, serving as co-CEOs of AMG and its production and finance unit Alcon Entertainment, issued a joint announcement expressing their satisfaction following the completion of the acquisition.
They mentioned that it benefited Alcon’s current collection of films, making them the copyright owners of one of the “most extensive independent feature film libraries globally.
They suggested they plan to seize similar opportunities again in the future, implying that they will actively seek out more appealing resources when they appear on the market.
According to a representative from Warner Bros. Discovery, it has been verified that for the movies within their collection, Warner Bros retains the ability to jointly fund spin-off productions of these movies, and they will also maintain control over the distribution of these films.
As a film enthusiast who’s been through some tough times financially, I can’t help but ponder the fate of films when the original owners face bankruptcy. The legalities surrounding such matters are never straightforward, but Alcon Entertainment managed to secure these beloved movies in their acquisition. It’ll be fascinating to observe how Alcon will manage these intellectual properties moving forward, compared to Village Roadshow – I can’t wait to see the difference!
Time alone will reveal the extent to which the movies might change under new ownership, underscoring just how swiftly and dramatically shifts can happen within the movie business.
