Despite high expectations, Mani Ratnam’s film titled “Thug Life” underperformed at the box office. Given that renowned director Mani Ratnam was teaming up with Kamal Haasan after a long time, fans had anticipated another triumph like their initial collaboration in “Nayakan”.
As a connoisseur of all things lifestyle-related, I must take a moment to address recent events concerning my latest project. Regrettably, it appears that my film has fallen short of the high standards we had set out to achieve. To those who placed their trust and anticipation in this production, I offer my sincerest apologies for not meeting your expectations.
Mani Ratnam apologizes for Thug Life failure
During a conversation with 123 Telugu, director Mani Ratnam discussed the shortcomings of Thug Life and admitted that they fell short of providing viewers with a cinematic experience similar to Nayakan, which many were eager to see.
He mentioned that, as a collective, they aimed to experiment with something novel, yet unfortunately, it seemed their endeavor wasn’t quite what the viewers were hoping for.
Apologizing for any disappointment, the speaker says, “If you were hoping for another ‘Nayakan’ from us, let me clarify that we never intended to revisit the past. Instead, we aimed to create something entirely new. I believe it was less about over-expectation and more about unfulfilled expectations. The audience expected something vastly different from what we ultimately presented.
Kamal Haasan and STR faced heavy loss after Thug Life ban in Karnataka?
In the course of events, the movie titled “Thug Life” faced an additional challenge when it was forbidden from being shown in Karnataka. This decision came about following some controversial comments made by Kamal Haasan that deeply offended the local Kannada-speaking community, leading to a ban on the film’s screening within the state.
Contrarily, a recent report suggested that the imposed ban led to approximately Rs 30 crore in losses for actors Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, an allegation later substantiated by the producers themselves.
Did Netflix renegotiate OTT deal with Thug Life makers?
Due to the film’s less-than-impressive box office run, there’s been talk that it might be made available for streaming on online platforms ahead of its initial release schedule.
In light of recent developments, it was previously reported by TopMob that Netflix was considering renegotiating their distribution deal with content creators for streaming releases. This potential new arrangement could see a substantial decrease in the cost compared to the initial price mentioned.
