James Gunn discusses why Jason Momoa’s Lobo plays a pivotal role in ‘Supergirl’ and how this character shapes the movie’s plot. In a recent podcast interview, Gunn explains that Supergirl converts the comic’s episodic structure into one coherent narrative. Additionally, he mentions that having Momoa portray Lobo adds both significance to the storyline and draws in big-name appeal for the film.
James Gunn on what Jason Momoa’s Lobo offers to Supergirl movie
In a future release on June 26, 2026, Jason Momoa takes on the role of Lobo in Supergirl. This significant casting choice was discussed by James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and producer of the film, during an episode of the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast.
Gunn explained, “The truth is that Woman of Tomorrow in the comics consists of many interconnected stories. To make it more coherent, we decided to craft one central story with a traditional three-act structure. Lobo assists us in accomplishing this.” He also made clear that Lobo is not a combination of other characters: “He’s an entirely independent character. He stands on his own.
Gunn referred to Lobo as “perhaps one of the most substantial comic book characters yet to appear in a movie.” The director expressed his admiration for Lobo, stating that he’s always believed the character would make an excellent adaptation. Originally hailing from Czarnia, Lobo is a recurring adversary in Supergirl’s comics, frequently butting heads with Kryptonian heroes.
In the upcoming series, Milly Alcock’s character, Supergirl, embarks on a vast intergalactic journey to seek vengeance for a death at the hands of Krem from the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. While Krem is not widely recognized and Schoenaerts is an acclaimed actor yet not a household name, his casting may not significantly boost commercial appeal. However, by bringing in Jason Momoa, who has star power, Gunn aims to increase the project’s visibility and solidify its place within the DC cinematic universe.
In the initial tale of the DC Universe, titled “Gods and Monsters,” Supergirl is among the characters featured. This cinematic journey commences on July 11, 2025, with the appearance of Superman. Craig Gillespie directs this film, while Ana Nogueira, who’s also working on a Teen Titans movie, pens the script. Alongside Alcock and Momoa, the star-studded cast includes David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Eve Ridley. Notably, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran collaborates with Gunn as a producer for this project.
