It’s been confirmed by the CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, that a scene from one of the Superman trailers will not be part of the final version of the upcoming DC Universe film, which is scheduled for release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
According to his unique approach, James Gunn reinterprets the original superhero within a fresh take on the DC universe, combining spectacular action, wit, and emotion. This Superman is motivated by compassion and a deep faith in humanity’s inherent goodness, as suggested by the synopsis.
What scene was cut from the Superman movie?
In a recent conversation with EW, Gunn clarified that a controversial Superman flying scene from a trailer, which received heavy criticism for its CGI, wasn’t part of the final cut of the DCU movie. He admitted he wasn’t fond of the shot himself and explained that it was likely included in one of the TV ads unintentionally, as he often overlooks commercials for his projects when examining them closely.
Gunn clarified that it wasn’t as impressive as people thought. It was a TV ad, not a fully-rendered visual effects shot. The part where he appeared to be flying was actually a still photo of his face superimposed onto footage of a drone flying. The drone was filmed in front of a real background, so the elements were genuine but assembled unconventionally. Gunn didn’t like the way it turned out, and the final shot used in the movie is different. Sometimes, he admitted, he overlooks details when examining commercials too quickly.
In the movie “Superman,” helmed by Gunn and inspired by DC characters originated by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, we see David Corenswet portraying both Superman/Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor. Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce becomes Perry White, Mikaela Hoover is cast as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett assumes Steve Lombard’s role, María Gabriela de Faría embodies The Engineer, Sara Sampaio portrays Eve Teshmacher, Anthony Carrigan takes on Metarmorpho, Frank Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced stars as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion graces the screen as Green Lantern, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell portray Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent respectively. The cast also includes Alan Tudyk, Michael Rooker, and Grace Chan in various roles.
