Following numerous fans expressing their thoughts on Clayface being the third film in the revamped DCU, James Gunn has clarified his reason for releasing the movie ahead of the debut of the DCU’s Batman. In a recent interview, the co-CEO of DC Studios disclosed that they expedited the Tom Rhys-led Clayface project due to Mike Flanagan’s outstanding screenplay, which played a significant role in influencing the scheduling decision.
James Gunn explains why DC is doing Clayface before Batman and Wonder Woman
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn explained why he decided to schedule the Clayface movie before the highly anticipated Batman film in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods & Monsters. He praised Flanagan’s script and stated that he simply wanted quality content for his refreshed DC Universe.
Regarding the Clayface film, Gunn stated, “To be honest, I believe we simply required content for the DC Universe. Mike Flanagan is someone I’ve known for a while and he reached out to me about Clayface early in my DC tenure. Initially, I didn’t think it was going to happen, but when he presented his idea, I was like, ‘Wow! That’s neat.’ It’s a body horror movie that, much like any great body horror film, is set within the DC Universe. He wrote the script, and it was amazing. We hadn’t planned on making a Clayface film; it was something he brought to us.
Although he’s focusing on the Clayface movie at the moment, Gunn hasn’t neglected The Brave and the Bold. This is evident in his comments during a recent interview. One of the five movies in the initial lineup for DCU’s first chapter, Gods & Monsters, the Batman project is being written by an unnamed writer, with Gunn overseeing the writing process himself.
In anticipation for the release of the Clayface movie, fans might want to look forward to the upcoming Superman film from the DC Universe instead, set to take flight in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
