DC’s James Gunn on if Sgt. Rock With Colin Farrell Is Really Canceled

In light of whispers implying that DC Studios has scrapped the earlier announced Sgt. Rock film, director James Gunn has offered some insight into the production’s current standing. Since the project was initially mentioned in November 2024, DC executives have remained tight-lipped about it. However, with recent conjecture pointing to the movie’s cancellation, Gunn appears to have sparked a glimmer of optimism among fans regarding its advancement.

James Gunn says Sgt. Rock is not canceled

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn clarified that contrary to what many believe, the Sgt. Rock movie at DC Studios is indeed ongoing. Nevertheless, Gunn pointed out some challenges with the project, stating that it hasn’t quite lined up yet with his vision for the DC Universe.

According to Gunn, while the Sgt. Rock movie for DC is progressing, it’s currently not in the state he envisioned creatively, requiring some adjustments before moving further ahead.

A few days ago, James Gunn announced he had canceled a DC Universe project because its script was uninspiring. In a recent interview, without specifying the film in question, Gunn said, “Everyone wanted to make this movie. It was approved and ready to go. However, the screenplay wasn’t up to par. I couldn’t proceed with a movie when the script wasn’t good.

Various people speculate that the joint CEO of DC Studios might have scrapped the Sgt. Rock film, where Colin Farrell from The Penguin was planned to star as the lead character. Although Gunn’s recent statements imply that the movie remains part of the DC Universe, he has not yet provided a definite timeframe for filming the project.
