A representative from the television program clarified to Soap Opera Digest that Muldoon was merely dropping by the studio to show it around to a friend, as depicted in their playful post about his visit. Previously, Soap Opera Digest had speculated Muldoon’s return based on an Instagram video suggesting a potential comeback, but it appears his appearance was not for a permanent role.

In the video, Muldoon strolls through the studio and exclaims, “Wow, I’m in Salem! It’s great to be back.” Later, the source admitted their mistake by expressing remorse for not verifying the news directly from the production team first.

Muldoon initially portrayed Austin Reed from 1992 to 1995, but he later came back for short periods in 2011 and 2021 (in Beyond Salem). Following his departure in 1995, another actor named Austin Peck stepped into the role and played it on numerous occasions until 2021.

Muldoon referred to landing the role as just another audition, and he remembered being chosen following a screen test with Tracy Middendorf. He departed the production in 1995 to pursue other ventures. Looking back on his 2011 comeback, Muldoon expressed it felt like returning home to family, yet admitted the difficulty of re-entering a role that another actor had reshaped.
