Glen Powell Will Extinguish Deadly Wildfires in Ron Howard’s Next Firefighter Movie

Actor Glen Powell, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, has been confirmed as the lead in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming firefighter film. The project is helmed by director Ron Howard, who has experience with this genre as he previously directed Backdraft in 1991, another movie focusing on firefighters.

Most recently, Powell was spotted in the 2024 film Twisters, a separate sequel to the classic 1996 disaster movie featuring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. Currently, he’s set to appear in notable projects such as Edgar Wright’s forthcoming Stephen King adaptation The Running Man, and J.J Abrams’ as-yet-untitled sci-fi production, where Jenna Ortega will also be featured. Production on the latter is ongoing. Towards the end of this year, Powell will make his significant foray into television, starring as the main character in Hulu’s new comedy series Chad Powers.

What is Glen Powell’s firefighter movie about?

As per Jeff Sneider, an insider, the upcoming project won’t be about a Backdraft sequel or remake. Instead, it will focus on two old friends from childhood who have become successful firefighters. They find themselves battling a dangerous string of fires in Texas while also dealing with the complexities of their relationship.

The upcoming film, currently unnamed, will be helmed by director Howard, based on a screenplay penned by Christina Hodson, who initially proposed the movie’s plot concept. Apart from being the director, Powell is also taking on the role of producer, in collaboration with Dan Cohen for Barnstorm. Additionally, Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jeb Brody are producing for Imagine Entertainment. Hodson is also slated to serve as an executive producer. At this time, there is no confirmed release date for the project.
