It’s been suggested that there could be a familial link between Pope Leo XIV and pop icon Madonna, according to a recent genealogical study. This newly crowned ruler of the Vatican City State was found to have an extensive and varied family background by this investigation.
Is Madonna related to Pope Leo XIV?
Indeed, it appears that Madonna and Pope Leo XIV share a family connection. According to investigations by The New York Times into their genealogy, they are distant cousins through a common maternal ancestor dating back to the 1590s.
It has been disclosed that the Pope shares distant familial ties with several prominent personalities, such as Madonna, Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton, and both Pierre and Justin Trudeau (the Canadian prime ministers). The relationships may differ in terms of how closely they are related.
The report further proposes that Pope Leo’s family tree spans across various parts of the world, incorporating several racial backgrounds. Remarkably, it was discovered that the leader of the Catholic Church has no less than 17 American forebears recognized as people of color.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Pope Leo has several great-grandmothers who were freedom fighters in their own right. One of his fourth-great-grandfathers, Charles Louis Boucher de Grandpre, led Louisiana militia forces and captured British strongholds in 1777. This could make the Pope a candidate for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution.
A significant historical character, Antonio Jose de Sucre, played a crucial part in overthrowing Spanish colonialism throughout Latin America. He stood alongside Simon Bolivar as an ally and later on was elected as the first constitutionally appointed president of Bolivia, following his valiant actions at the Battle of Ayacucho.
Furthermore, an extensive family history research by American Ancestors and the Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami revealed that Pope Leo XIV’s ancestry could be traced as far back as 14 generations. This research connected him to his 12th great-grandparents, reaching back to the year 1500.
As I delved deeper into my genealogical exploration, I stumbled upon an intriguing revelation about Pope Leo’s ancestry. It turns out that no less than eight of his known forefathers were involved in the American institution of slavery. Interestingly, a majority of these slaveholders were people of African descent themselves.
Marie Jeanne, believed to be the fourth-generation grandma from his mother’s side, was reportedly a slave owned by François Lemelle. She gave birth to at least six of his children. Lemelle freed Marie Jeanne and two of her daughters in 1772, and he left one-fifth of his estate, which included 15 slaves, to her upon his death in 1789.
In the process, the intriguing revelation about Pope Leo’s varied heritage has ignited an amusing debate on social media. One devotee quipped on platform X, “It seems like Pope Leo is related to every celebrity who follows a ‘no filter’ approach.” Could it be they all gather for family get-togethers with a dash of excitement?
Another X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “Lowkey… this might be the coolest Pope in history.”
