As a fervent movie enthusiast, I’ve just learned that there might be a director in the pipeline for the next A24 production, titled “Breakthrough,” featuring the charismatic Dwayne Johnson, according to the latest scoop from Deadline.
Who is in talks to direct Breakthrough?
As Deadline’s article suggests, there are preliminary discussions taking place between Darren Aronofsky and filmmakers about his potential role as director for an upcoming movie. At this stage, no agreement has been reached, but if it goes ahead, it would mark a reunion of Aronofsky with A24 after their successful collaboration on the 2022 film, The Whale.
Currently, details about the film are scarce, but it’s being whispered that Johnson will portray a character who appears to be a motivational guide. However, beneath his charismatic facade, he allegedly conceals manipulative tendencies. Zeke Goodman is penning the script at present, and no further casting details have been disclosed yet.
The plot unfolds in millennial Southern California, focusing on a disconnected youth who gets caught up in the teachings of an enigmatic motivational speaker. His captivating allure hides dubious moral practices and hidden shadows.
In a collaboration, Shiny Penny Productions owned by Stacey Sher will team up with Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions to create the film titled Breakthrough. Lighthouse Management and Media, represented by Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf, are on board as executive producers.
In the year 2024, Dwayne Johnson portrayed Callum “Cal” Drift alongside Chris Evans in Red One, and he also continued voicing Maui in Disney’s sequel to Moana. Alongside The Smashing Machine, he is currently collaborating with Martin Scorsese on a project featuring stars like Blunt and DiCaprio. A release date for this movie, which revolves around a Hawaiian crime boss, has yet to be announced. Moreover, audiences can look forward to seeing Johnson’s live-action portrayal of Maui in the upcoming remake of Moana, scheduled for July 10, 2026.
