Matthew McConaughey Reunites With True Detective Creator for Mike Hammer Movie

Actor Matthew McConaughey and writer Nic Pizzolatto, the mastermind behind True Detective, are teaming up once more for a brand-new film adaptation of the character Mike Hammer.

In the initial run of HBO’s series True Detective, which began airing in January 2014, Matthew McConaughey portrayed Detective Rustin Cohle, while Woody Harrelson played Detective Martin Hart – both characters were detectives. Their outstanding performances in this drama earned them Emmy nominations for the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Currently, according to Deadline, Pizzolatto and McConaughey are teaming up again for a new Skydance movie adaptation of the Mike Hammer book series.

What do we know about the Mike Hammer movie with Matthew McConaughey?

In this film production, the screenplay was penned by Pizzolatto, but there’s no director assigned as of now. The producers for this project are Guymon Casady from Entertainment 360, Benjamin Forkner from Pendleton, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Ken F. Levin. Max Allan Collins acts as an executive producer, while Jane Spillane works as a co-producer.

Originating from the mind of Mickey Spillane, Mike Hammer is a fictional private investigator who made his first appearance in the 1947 novel I, the Jury. Since then, he has featured in numerous books and short stories. After Spillane’s passing, Collins assumed control over the series.

In the past, several movies featuring Mike Hammer have been produced. Two of these are adaptations of I, the Jury – one was released in 1953, while another came out in 1982. Additionally, there’s Kiss Me Deadly from 1955, My Gun Is Quick from 1957, and The Girl Hunters from 1963.

Since 2019’s The Gentlemen, Matthew McConaughey hasn’t appeared in a live-action film, but he has a few upcoming ones. The Rivals of Amziah King had its world premiere at the 2025 SXSW Festival and garnered positive feedback from critics, though a release date is still unknown. Additionally, he will be featured in Paul Greengrass’s The Lost Bus, slated for release this coming autumn.

Pizzolatto and McConaughey’s Mike Hammer movie does not have a release date at this time.
