PlayStation confirms more PS Plus price adjustments are coming “to maximise profitability” as more players subscribe to higher tiers

Starting from the launch of PlayStation 5 in 2020, Sony has not only hiked up the cost of its current-generation console on multiple occasions but also the fee for its PS Plus subscription service. This online gaming membership has seen a significant rise in cost across all levels, and Sony intends to continue raising prices to boost their profits.

In a recent huddle, I, as a gaming enthusiast, learned that our beloved Sony Interactive Entertainment boss, Hideaki Nishino, has hinted at further tweaks in the pricing structure of our cherished PlayStation Plus service. The reason? They’re aiming to squeeze every last drop of profitability from this fantastic platform we all enjoy.

PS Plus prices will be adjusted again

Although Nishino didn’t explicitly predict a rise in prices, he clarified that the increased cost of PS Plus hasn’t led to a decrease in subscribers. On the contrary, an increasing number of players are opting for the pricier versions of PS Plus compared to any time before.

According to Nishino, it’s observed that a larger number of our subscribers are opting for the Premium and Extra plans. These two options make up about 38% of our total subscriber base as of now.

The Chief Executive Officer of SIE stated that gamers using PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles greatly appreciate PlayStation Plus. Notably, more players are subscribing to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra tiers, even as prices have risen, and this trend is continuing.

Nishino clarified that these actions include the global price adjustments made during FY2023 and the local price changes in specific nations more recently. The purpose is to optimize our pricing approach within certain market groups, as well as to factor in fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

According to the head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, some price hikes are due to the growing worth of their offerings, enabling them to add features like custom player experiences and improved content navigation. Further changes and possible additional advantages are anticipated in the near future.

The CEO stated, “PlayStation Plus delivers a lot of worth to our gamers, and we plan to enhance its value even further while adapting our pricing approach flexibly to optimize profits.

1) Over the past few years, the cost of PS Plus has significantly escalated, with an annual premium subscription now 35% higher than it was in 2023. Given that PC gamers can play multiplayer games without charge, this price hike seems quite harsh to console users who do not enjoy the service’s extra perks.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen PlayStation gradually increasing prices in various regions, a trend that seems to be expanding globally. It looks like there might be further hikes in the price of PS Plus subscription services.
