Steven Universe Returns With Galactic Sequel “Lars Of The Stars”

Cartoon Network Studios is revealing “Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars,” an upcoming, animated spin-off series that’s being worked on now and will eventually be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The disclosure emerged during Warner Bros. Animation’s presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where series creator Rebecca Sugar resumed her role as executive producer, accompanied by frequent collaborator Ian Jones-Quartey from OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes.

In the series, the main character is Lars Barriga, formerly a cranky adolescent from Beach City, who has transformed into a leader with rosy skin, commanding a band of oddball Gems as his pirate crew.

He’res the official synopsis:

“Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars explores the past, present and future of the universe. The sequel follows Lars Barriga, eternal teenager and space outlaw, as he and his pirate crew smuggle contraband, evade the authorities and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire”

New Visuals And Tone Of The Series

The new logo suggests a defiant mood; the “O” in “Stars” is styled as a skull, mirroring Lars’ famous earrings, which add an iconic touch to this rebellious image.

The logo has a raw, punk-like atmosphere that reflects a broader motif within the series: finding a sense of belonging despite being an outsider. In the world of Lars of the Stars, neither Off-Colors nor Lars were ever intended to conform to Gem society’s norms. Instead, they embody a spirit of rebellion, creating their own significance from what was once discarded, which appears to be a key theme throughout the series.

A Fan-Favorite Title Returns

Veteran viewers might recall the moniker – “Lars of the Stars” was initially the title of an episode in season 5, where Lars’ dashing alternate persona and his motley crew of Off-Colors were initially presented. Now, this idea is being expanded to become a complete television series.

It seems highly probable that the fresh series continues from where Lars left off in space following the episode “Little Graduation,” now embracing the idea that neither Earth nor his history with Sadie can tether him anymore.

New Secrets

According to the outline, the upcoming series aims to delve into the changing nature of the Gem community during Era 3, now governed by a reform-minded, or perhaps still in the process of self-improvement, Diamond administration.

Previously, Sugar expressed interest in delving into the history behind the Diamonds, a topic that could potentially be addressed in the upcoming series.

Audience might catch a reappearance of some unanswered plotlines, such as the enigmatic “Emerald,” and maybe even disclose minor facts – for instance, the unique gems that one of the characters, Fluorite, is composed of.

The series could potentially unveil fresh alien species and celestial bodies, thereby expanding the universe in dimensions that the initial version hadn’t been able to delve into.

Ties to the Past – And To Steven

While Steven himself isn’t the focus, his story isn’t forgotten.

Following the occurrences in Steven Universe Future, he persists in seeking healing and meaning, having relinquished his position as Pink Diamond. Moreover, thanks to Lars’ enchanted hair portal, there remains a possibility for shared moments across universes – offering glimpses into Steven’s fresh path.

No Release Date Yet, But Prime Video On Board

At present, Lars of the Stars is being actively worked on, but there’s no specific date set for its launch yet. Nevertheless, it has been confirmed that this series will be available for streaming only on Amazon Prime Video, following a new collaboration between Amazon and Cartoon Network Studios.
